Principally Stuart's letters while serving in the Confederate Army, describing camp life, food and clothing, marches and engagements around Richmond and Petersburg, Va., and in eastern North Carolina, prices of horses, and the inefficiency of Confederate administration and military leadership. Also included are letters from his step-father, John Harper, describing conditions at home and depredations by deserters and conscripts in hiding; letters from his cousin, Haywood Nall, of Indiana; school attendance records and book orders relating to his teaching after the war, especially in Montgomery County, N.C.; and a history of Montgomery County, 1927.
